Over the course of two years, Women Win engaged with a diverse set of experts, social entrepreneurs, programme directors, business people and girls from around the world to share their perspectives on income generation and knowledge about how to address economic empowerment through sport. These individuals work in women's rights, sport and development, economic development, social enterprises and businesses large and small. Women Win programme partners generously provided detailed data, market insights and patiently answered questions. The result of this collective learning is the International Guide to Economic Empowerment Through Sport.
- Economic empowerment can be integrated into girls' sport programmes, starting with existing programmes:
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by offering participants opportunities to earn money from within the programme, such as coaching, officiating or washing and repairing uniforms
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by creating opportunities for girls to learn and practice skills. Computer and office skills can be learned through volunteering in the office and keeping practice, tournament and other administration records
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by providing school scholarship support for girls who exhibit extraordinary leadership as part of the programme
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by teaching girls math, reading and verbal skills
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by educating girls about how to manage and earn money or open a savings account
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by helping girls develop marketable skills to secure jobs in the community
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by encouraging girls to develop a sense of financial independence and confidence in their ability to earn money
- Integrate economic empowerment into existing girls' sports programmes by training girls on how to operate a microbusiness, whether one they might start themselves in the future or helping a small family business.
- Economic empowerment initiatives succeed when: community need meets market need, economic value trumps cultural norms, the power of the "Team" is valued, there is access to capital, NGOs play critical role for impact assessment, and there is a synergy of wealth creation and development goals.
